What advice do Family Lawyers provide?
Family Lawyers advise individuals on a wide range of family law matters.
This can include advice at the start of or during a relationship, for example, preparing a pre-nuptial agreement, post-nuptial agreement or cohabitation agreement.
In addition, advice can be provided at the end of your relationship, whether you have separated or thinking of separating and the issues that arise such as divorce or dissolution, and/or legal advice on the financial implications post-separation and child arrangements.
There may also be a need to seek advice on specific issues relating to children, such as a change of name, a parent may wish to relocate abroad and/or decisions regarding schooling or medical treatment.
Family Lawyers also provide advice surrounding domestic abuse and obtain orders from the Family Courts to protect individuals from people known to them.
Your Family Lawyer can also refer you and signpost you to other support or professional services including counselling, mediation, financial advisors and other local services.
How do I know if a family lawyer is good?
Consider the firm’s website
This should give you a good idea of who the lawyers are, the type of work they do and their specific areas of expertise.
Are they a member of Resolution?
Our family lawyers are all members of Resolution and as such must abide by the Resolution Code of Practice to work constructively to achieve the best outcome for individuals seeking advice and representation, particularly when dealing with children-related matters.
See what other qualifications/accreditations they may hold
Resolution members and some Law Society members will have specialist accreditations in particular areas of law and some family lawyers may be collaboratively trained, which enables you to try and reach an agreement through round-the-table meetings, which could avoid lengthy and costly court proceedings.
Ask for recommendations
A lot of our work comes from recommendations from past clients. This is always a good sign as we aim to provide the highest level of advice and representation to clients.
