Staff at King Street Solicitors have teamed up with Nottingham Law School and since September have been offering one to one mentoring with a handful of Legal Practice Course students.

The mentoring offered to the students has been by way of telephone and email but to make the programme stand out from the rest we offered our mentees the opportunity to spend a day here at King Street Solicitors but this was not to simple shadow our solicitors but to see what happens on the other side of the desk when recruiting.

We had a well-structured day planned out for our mentees which included a general meet and greet whereby each student met their mentors and their peers who would ultimately become their competition when they come to apply for training contracts. We gave the students the opportunity of completing a group in-tray exercise which we used doing our recruitment process last summer followed by feedback as to the marking structure.

Mock interviews then followed and feedback was given immediately as to their answering strategy, conduct, dress, preparation for an interview, knowledge of the firm and competition. The responses received from the mentees were that the interviews certainly prepared them for what was to come and allowed them to practice their interviewing techniques.

Each student had the opportunity to seek advice from their mentors and the other solicitors within the practice and they were all treated to lunch at Rusticos in Wakefield and given some free time to see what Wakefield had to offer.

The day concluded with feedback and a question and answer session and was very well received by the mentees.

We want to say thank you to our mentees for taking the time to visit us as well as Nottingham Law School and to all the staff here at King Street for ensuring that the day went smoothly and ensured that the students got the most out of the day.
